Dear Parents,
We have started to work on our play from the story “The Sneetches”. The children are very aware of the social justice issue regarding acceptance through our interactive read alouds. The play will give the children a chance to present this theme to an audience. I have included some of the lines we are learning already. Stay tuned for more lines as time goes on! Mrs. Armstrong is our Producer and is helping us with our parts. Your assistance with this big undertaking is very appreciated! I am hoping all of the children will be at “The Sneetches” as it is the culmination of a lot of learning and commitment! They will all deserve the standing ovation!

Dear Parents,
We have a small but MIGHTY School Council. As one of the teachers on the council, I am always in awe at the dedication of a few parents on behalf of all the children in the school. They have managed to fund raise for a Kindie Yard and Outdoor Classroom in two years!!! I can not tell you the time commitment and enthusiasm this took. From Mighty Motors to the Dance-a-Thon these parents worked so hard. The School Council is dreaming BIG when planning a rejuvenation of the playground. They are going to be having an On-Line Auction again this year. Although very successful they are hoping to raise even more money. To get the children to be more engaged in this event, we would like to have a Bake Sale. The proceeds will go the purchasing items to the On-Line Auction. PLEASE sent in peanut free goodies on Thursday April 13th! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DONATE an item to the Auction as well. Bring you item to Mrs. Wilson so it can be included!!

Dear Parents,
I have been made aware from one of our parents that her little on is suffering from pinworms. Here is some information from "The Mayo Clinic" online. Rest assured we will be doing more hand washing! I will also remind the children of the importance to wash their hands after going to the washroom.
Pinworm infection is the most common type of intestinal worm infection in the United States and one of the most common worldwide. Pinworms are thin and white, measuring about 1/4 to 1/2 inch (about 5 to 13 millimeters) in length.
While the infected person sleeps, female pinworms lay thousands of eggs in the folds of skin surrounding the anus. Most people infected with pinworms have no symptoms, but some people experience anal itching and restless sleep.
Pinworm infection occurs most often in school-age children, and the microscopic eggs are easily spread from child to child. Treatment involves oral drugs that kill the pinworms and thorough washing of bedclothes, bed linens and underwear. For best results, the entire family should be treated.
Symptoms of pinworm infection may include:
When to see a doctorConsult your doctor if you have severe anal itching, especially at night.

Dear Parents,
I got this letter from Mrs Allessio and I thought there was some great points I wanted to pass along before the report card comes home next week. Please be aware that I have read over important parts of the report card to your child and we have set some goals together.
BEFORE YOU READ THE REPORT CARD-
WHAT DO THE MARKS MEAN?
B is the goal! Your child is doing well and demonstrating that he/she understands the concepts which have been taught.
C indicates a partial understanding of the skills and concepts for the grade. He/she needs some support from a teacher to complete learning.
D means major difficulties with the subject area and that a lot of individual assistance is needed.
A is pretty rare. It is reserved for students whose work demonstrates a greater degree of understanding and goes beyond expectations for the grade level.
WHEN THE REPORT CARD COMES HOME-
-Take the time to sit down together and read the report with your child.
-Whether you are happy or upset with the report card, stay calm.
-Ask your child what he/she thinks he/she is doing well on. Talk together about areas for improvement and discuss some goals.
-Avoid setting unrealistic goal. Don't promise major rewards for achieving certain grades or for passing. For young children, those kind of rewards are just too far away and don't really impact on day to day effort.
Plan together for the daily things you will each do to help your child improve. Be practical. What will you do? When will you fit it in? How will you know when your child achieves his/her goal?
-Let your child know that you are behind him/her always, and that all you are expecting is that he/she try always to do the best he/she can!

Dear Parents!
I saw this in front of Roxanne's Reflections (my favourite book store!) and thought it was appropriate! In another week or two, we are going to be working on comprehension skills with Dr. Suess and Robert Munch books. Please keep reading to your child! It is the greatest gift you can give them! It opens up their imagination to other worlds, which helps to make them better writers. It would be helpful to have them retell you the story.
- What happened in the beginning?
-Where is the setting?
-Who are the characters?
In the middle of the story ..
-What is the problem?
-What is the solution?
-At the end..
Did you like the story? Why?
MAKE A CONNECTION..
In the story this happened....What does that remind you of? (may be a personal connection, another story or a media/movie connection.
I always tell the children READING HAS TO MAKE SENSE! So working on comprehension skills is critical to their development as a reader!

. Dear Parents,
We started our new inquiry on Penguins. The children were asking questions about this unique bird which we will answer over the next few weeks. We also listended to the story "Tacky the Penguin". Tacky is an odd sort of penguin but he likes himself just the way he is! The children made a connection to this kind hearted creature and described what is special about them.
As most of the children are becoming more proficient in their reading strategies, we are starting to focus in on fluency and expression. One of the reason I do have the children remove their finger from the text after Level 3 is that they will read slowly or like a "Robot". When a child can decode the words at a smooth rate, there is a better chance he or she will comprehend what they read....AND.."READING HAS TO MAKE SENSE!". The children are also paying more to punctation. Their voices go down at a period or comma and up at a exclamation or question mark.
Every morning the children are re-reading a book from their Home Reading Kit or a book from the classroom. I am finding their are really only a handful of students participating in nightly reading. This home learning is critical to helping children develop fluency and confidence as a reader. At this point in grade one it is like a light bulb goes off. For many children their brain is just ready to read. All it takes is encouragement and practise. Without this support, a child may fall behind and it is difficult to "recover" them to grade level. PLEASE support home reading with your child.
Just for your own interest a child in Grade one should be reading at LEVEL 10 in the PM SERIES by the First Term Reporet (See BELOW). SOmetimes all a child needs is extra practise to achieve these levels!

Dear Parents,
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Well, it feels like the children grew up over the holidays. They came in so settled and eager to learn! We are beginning the year with a unit on Robert Munsch and Dr. Suess stories and an Inquiry on Penguins. In Science, the Grade One's will be learning about "Structures" with Mrs. Caunter. The Grade Two's will be sticking with me to learn about the "Six Simple Machines".
We are very grateful to our School Council for sponsoring "Scientists in the School" to help us explore these units with fun and engaging activities in the next few weeks!
Special Person of the Week- Over the next few months, we will do activities with individual children. Please look over the activities which will happen each day so you can help your child be prepared. I will send home a reminder a week before it is your child’s turn. Some weeks are a little shortened. No worries, I will fit in everything your child is to do that week. If you need bristol board please let me know and I will get it for you! It is critical that your child have their poster prepared and objects ready for the week indicated below so they can participate in these special activities. As always your help is so appreciated to make this successful. On Fridays we will make a booklet for our special person which will emphasize the use of adjectives and make that child feel proud! Here is how the week will go for your child:

NOTE FROM OUR ECO CHAMPION...MRS. COLLIER!!
Buy Nothing Day is coming up at the end of November as a protest against consumerism. To support the idea of using less and reusing more, we are planning a new thing for Jingle Mingle. Students and staff will be asked donate gently used items (books, toys, games, nick nacks, accessories, jewelry etc). At Jingle Mingle, the students will be able to purchase items for 25 cents. There will be a wrapping area with bows and gift tags so our VT kids can get their Xmas shopping done for their family and friends for very little money. The proceeds will go towards adopting a caribou from the WWF. So, please bring in your gently used unwanted items along with a roll or two of wrapping paper, bows or gift tags! THANKS!! |

I went to Michael's last night and found some things to start our Christmas baskets. I am making a boy and a girl one. One basket will be for the class and the other is from me as a member of our School Council. Please think about adding one or two items to our baskets. Actually, the more we have then we can make more baskets. ...This is great because we will have less disappointed children at Jingle Mingle!

We are going to enjoy our Pizza and PJ PARTY!!
Dear Parents,
On the PA Day, the teachers spent a lot of time looking at the results from EQAO in Math.
We developed a goal for improving the children's ability to problem solve. Initially, I will be teaching the children different strategies to solve the problem. You can see some of the examples...draw a picture, use tools or counters, act the problem out. Then we are using a four square problem solving template to work through the question. First we decide what we need to find out and what we already know. Then we figure out a good strategy to use. Next, we work to solve the problem. Finally, we need to answer the question. This has proved to be challenging but there is lots of opportunity for great learning. We don't have it ..YET!! But as all the primary teachers are working on this format, it will hopefully make a difference for our students for future EQAO testing. Another big thing we are working on is resilience. It takes a lot of commitment to persevere on a problem. I will be encouraging the children to keep trying. They need to be "flexible" and try other ways as well. Of course, "FAILURE LEADS TO SUCCESS!" will be our motto. It is awesome to learn from our mistakes!

Dear Parents,
It has been wonderful to see so many home book bags come back every day. We are working on becoming “voracious” readers. The children are learning that the more words they read ...the better readers they will become. Actually many of the children are moving up levels as I am individually assessing their reading. It is important to remember though that each individual child is learning to read at his or her own pace. This is a magical time when many children easily develop the strategies to read while others will benefit from practice, extra help and our loving encouragement. The whole primary division is teaching reading using the READING CAFÉ. The Café outlines all the strategies children need to become better readers. Please see the section ABC to learn about the strategy your child is working on. I have indicated the specific reading strategy which will support each child's reading development in the Home Reading Record Book. As always your time and assistance is so greatly appreciated! While I am using the Cafe to teach, the children are involved in DAILY 5..please see the home page for more information and see how we practiced "READ TO SELF".
C. A. F. E stands for :
Comprehension- “I understand what I read”. Children learn to retell stories with detail, make connections to the text and visualize what is happening to help them recall events which take place. This is the most important part of reading! The children know that reading "HAS TO MAKE SENSE!"
Accuracy-“I can read the words!”. The children learn strategies to decode words they don’t know. PLEASE refrain from saying “sound it out”. This strategy actually slows down reading and it is then harder for children to recall and comprehend what they have read. Always say “What do you know?”. Children will usually know the first sound and the pictures help the children think about what makes sense.
Fluency- “I can read accurately, with expression and I understand what I read”. Children learn to use punctuation appropriately when they read. They need to make their reading “sound like talking” or sound like a character in the story. This helps them read with greater comprehension.
Expand Vocabulary- “I know, find and use interesting words.” When your child does not understand a word please get them to ask for the meaning.
RAZKIDS.com (password-lvonk)- This is a wonderful website to help reinforce the different reading strategies. We were working on Raz Kids during “Read to Self” time this week. At home you can login with the password- lvonk. I have included the icons which your child can use to get to his or her page. The fun thing about this sight is the children can create a virtual world with points they earn from reading and answering the comprehension questions. Enjoy!

TERRY FOX RUN-We have been practising for the Terry Fox Run!! During the day the children have been running the perimeter of the yard to build up their stamina. They were able to do three laps...great commitment! Please help your child earn a twoonie at home by doing something helpful...like Terry! We are trying to fill Terry’s sock with twoonies and help the fight against Cancer. Unfortunately we will not be joining the school on the trail for the run on Thursday, as several parents did not wish their children to participate on "walking trips". However, we will be running in the school yard!

Dear Parents-LANGUAGE- I have been so thrilled with the nightly reading that appears to be happening for most of the children!! Please remember to record the books your child has read. For every ten books a child reads, they get a special prize. After they read 100 books they get an invitation to the Party at the end of the year. I have started guided reading groups to work on specific reading strategies with the children. For most of these young readers the most effective thing to say when they are stuck on a word (after “what do you know?”) is “Get your mouth ready for the first sound and think what makes sense.” This teaches the children that words must look right and also make sense. In grade two the students are reminded to be a Tryin’ Lion! They are expected to go back and read the line again so it will make sense. I am developing comprehension strategies with the children as well. While I read a story to the children, I ask them to put a picture in their mind about what they see. Good readers can visualize the story and this helps them recall details and understand events. As you snuggle up and read at night talk to your child about what you or they are seeing throughout the story.
SCIENCE- We are beginning an inquiry on monkeys, since that was the type of animal Curious George is! As we are reading books, I am talking to the children about the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. All of the children made marvellous monkey which is in their art box to see at “Meet the Teacher” . They have each asked a question which we will answer over the next few weeks. Check out the new section of the website called Inquiring Minds. Some of the questions and answers will be posted there! We also read a great book called Think -a-ma-Jink which is about using your imagination...so we are off to a good start!

PA DAY- Friday September 30th
Dear Parents,
It was with great pleasure that I welcomed your child into our class this year. Some of the children were with me last year and have fallen easily into the routines at school. They have been a great help to our new grade one students. We are now officially a permanent class called the MIGHTY MONKEYS! As we are starting off with an inquiry on monkey! I just hope everyone does not "Go Wild"! It is the 75th Anniversary for Curious George and we will be reading all about the inquisitive little guy. We are blessed to have a wonderful parent volunteer! Mrs. Armstrong is in every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, plus she does the school snack program! This parent is truly inspirational and a joy to have in the classroom with me (even though her son has long since left grade two!). We call her our "Meacher" ...or Mom-Teacher! This year the children will have Music, Drama, and Gym with Mrs. Dammeier. I am grateful they have art instruction with our resident artist, Mrs Collier, as she inspires amazing creativity from each child. Our school always looks spectacular when the children’s artwork is displayed on the walls.
I will endeavor weekly (or almost!) to keep you informed of classroom activities, curriculum content and upcoming events on our website. As we are the only elementary Platinum Eco School in our school board, I am hoping to be as paperless as I can be with home communication. If you are unable to use a computer and would like a paper copy of newsletters, please let me know. There are just a few “housekeeping” items that I need you to be aware of.
INQUIRY BASED CLASSROOM-
“Inquiry is a process of learning that encourages kids to ask questions, to work together to solve problems, to discover knowledge and to construct their own meaning.” Harvey and Daniels
I want this classroom to be inquiry based and have children learn from each other. I try to teach as much as possible from what interests each child. As children are so wonder-ful….I never know where their interests and imagination will take us! Plus, I provide artifacts (ie. bee hive) or activities to stimulate their curiosity and deeper questioning. If your child has something he or she finds fascinating please send it to the classroom. We will love to inquire and learn from each other!
PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD MAKE A WONDER JAR. WE WILL BE USING THEM TO DEVELOP INQUIRING MINDS. IT IS ALSO A WONDER-FUL WAY FOR US TO LEARN ABOUT EACH OTHER. MY HOPE TO USE THEM AT A MEET THE TEACHER EVENT, SO I MAY HOLD ON TO THEM FOR A LITTLE WHILE. PLEASE DON’T INCLUDE ANYTHING YOUR CHILD CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT!
SNACK- The children will have two nutrition breaks each day. It is essential that they have healthy food choices in their lunch bag. It is interesting to note that the Ministry of Education has mandated that teachers provide twenty minutes of vigorous activity a day to try to prevent childhood obesity and diabetes. Snack is a perfect time to teach children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle! Our curriculum also emphasizes the importance of choosing healthy food from the four food groups. I will be cheering for all the healthy choices I see the children making. Please be aware that we are school that celebrates our environmental excellence. Children learn to be kind to the Earth in various ways throughout the year. It is so appreciated when the children bring re-usable containers for snack. All garbage will be “boomeranged” back home in the lunch pail.
Research indicates that our brains require a lot of water for effective learning. As I would like lots of brain activity, I will motivate the children to drink up! It would be wonderful for your child to have a reusable drinking container (preferably not plastic!) to keep at school. We can get fresh water each morning to encourage this good habit!
“Around the world, children get an hour less sleep than they did thirty years ago. The cost: IQ points, emotional-well being, ADHD, and obesity”
This quote comes from “Nurture Shock, which is a parenting book available in the school library. It is truly frightening to think that children who are not getting the proper sleep perform at a grade level two years behind their current grade. Please consider cuddling up with a good book as a nighttime ritual and make sure your child gets plenty of sleep!
READING KITS- The children will bring home a Book Bag every evening. Your child will have a book which will be at his or her individual reading level. Children in grade one should read 5-10 minutes each night. Grade two children are encouraged to read 10-15 minutes. You will notice that I have provided a booklet of reading strategies to use with your child. PLEASE visit the "ABC" section of the website. It will have lots of useful information for both you and your child to help with reading and writing this year. When your child is trying to read an unfamiliar book, try not to say “sound it out”. This is actually of very slow strategy to rely on when reading. Try to ask “What do you know?!”. Some children will try the first sound, others will think about what makes sense after looking at pictures. We will develop all the strategies as the year goes on. Each evening, please record the title of the book in the Reading Log. We will be celebrating all reading with prizes for every ten books the children read- up to 100 books. I have promised the children an evening event when we all read one hundred books!!
It is important to understand that decoding words is only one part of being able to read. Comprehension is critical! The children will be assessed not only in their ability to read unknown words, but also, their ability to answer questions about the book before they will move on in their reading levels reading levels. This year we will work a lot on comprehension strategies such as retelling and making connections to the main event in a text.
LIBRARY- Snuggling up to read books with your child is one of the most important things you can do to develop a love of reading in your child. Stories stir the imagination of these budding writers as well. Your child will bring a library book home every week. Please store the book in a safe place. The book and the bag need to be returned on DAY 2 so your child can take out a new book. Our school also offers the opportunity to purchase quality books for your child. Every month the children bring home Scholastic Book orders. If you are interested in any books just write a cheque out to Scholastic and send the form into the school on the assigned date. The proceeds we receive from Scholastic help us to fund our Books for Birthdays program. It is lovely to give the children the gift of reading on their special day.
EIGHT KEYS OF SUCCESS-As a part of the values education at V.T. we teach the children about “The Eight Keys of Success”. The Environmental Studies expectations require children to understand rules at home, at school and in their community. The “Keys of Excellence” give the children a common language about expectations at VT. This month when we do the Terry Fox Run, we will help the children make a personal connection to the “Commitment” key. This is defined as the ability to always try your very best without giving up. A great message for these young students as they learn to persevere in various ways at school. Please find the list of “Keys” attached to this newsletter. You might like to use them in your own home!

HOMEWORK- Reading is the most effective use of your time after school with your child. Each week I will also have a list of spelling words that you can work on with your child. A child can become an effective reader and writer if he or she has known words to read and write. Spelling practice helps give the children a list of “high frequency words” which they can readily use. Hopefully you will pick up a little bag of writing tools to help motivate your child to practise the words at Meet the Teacher. It will help you discover playful ways to work on words at home. You can also use the items in the bag to work on number formation as well!
FRIDAY FOLDERS - All of the children’s work will come home in a white folder. Please find time to snuggle with your child and admire his or her efforts. The encouragement you give will have a huge impact on the work your child will do at school.
HELP!!- We collect several things at the school to help fund school trips and events. We collect pop tabs for the aluminum which is used to make wheelchairs. The outside bag from milk bags are sent to women who turn them into mats for children who live in warm climates where the bugs eat bedding. We also collect ink cartridges for some extra money to support school wide activities. Anything you can donate would be greatly appreciated!!!
HEALTH CONCERNS- Please be aware that our school is peanut free as there is a child with a life threatening allergy. At any time please let me know if there is any health or personal concern for your child that might affect his or her temperament or learning.
MATH and DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION- The primary teachers will be working with smaller math groups. Your child will be with either Mrs. Caunter, Mrs. Allesio or myself.
MATH and DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION- The primary teachers will be working with math groups which correspond with the level of math instruction that individual children require. Your child will be with either Mrs. Caunter, Mrs. Allessio or myself.
Mrs Vonk’s Mathematicians- Alexa, Alexis, Kaden, Keith, Liam, Lucas, Lily, Shaunna, Markus, Mason, Nico, Neil, Oliver, Maya, Ben, Josh, Travis, Devon, Harmony, Megan
Mrs. Caunter’s Mathematicians- Caleb, Cole, Noah, Matt, Lexi
Mrs. Allesio- Ella and Kate
When we have started our different grouping, the children in my group are doing a lot of patterning and symmetry work. We are also learning to count by 1's, 5's and 10's to 100. When children can easily count by 1's, they will be ready for the plus one strategy for adding in their head (is. 12 + 1 = 13). Counting by 5's is important when working with tallies, telling time on an analogue clock and working with nickels. I often practised counting with my children when they were trapped in the car with me!! The grade two children are starting to learn numbers that go beyond 100. We watched a fun YouTube symmetry video that you might like to listen to with your child. (Symmetry Rap- Mr. Thompson’s Grade 2).
Throughout the year, Mrs Caunter and I combine our classes for different initiatives in Science and Social Studies as well. I count myself very fortunate to be able to work so collaboratively with an outstanding educator. We motivate each other to provide innovative and fun activities for the children in both classes. Therefore, much of our program is the same in both classes to provide continuity in the school. Plus, two heads are better that one when we are thinking of curriculum ideas for the children!
SCHOOL COUNCIL MEMBERS- Perhaps you are unable to volunteer during the day and would still like to be involved in your child’s education. Our School Council is actually quite desperate for new members. Our council meets on the first Monday of every month and there are always treats! This is an invaluable way to have input into life at VT. I am on the council and would love to see you there!!
QUESTIONS and CONCERNS- I like to have a very open door policy in this classroom. I will make myself available to discuss any questions you have regarding your child’s education. Please call the school at 519-843-2720 if you have any questions or concerns. As a team we will make this a very rewarding year for your child!
DATES TO REMEMBER-
