We went to the outdoor classroom and drew pictures of what we are thankful for. We are going to be counting the numbers forwards and backwards!
The video below will help you learn how to make your numbers!

We wondered if this was a pattern or not. I used the "Making Thinking Visible Routine of "Tug of War" to see the children's opinions. It was interesting that Cole noted that "It was not a pattern because the colours were random". Kate also mentioned that "it wasn't repeating over and over again". So we will be working on the concept that there is a "core" in a pattern which stays the same and repeats. We will also do lots of sorting activities so that the children learn that patterns are not just colours!
THE PATTERN SONG
(Tune: Oh My Darlin)
BY THE MIGHTY MATHMETICIANS
When you pattern,
When you pattern,
Look at the attributes..
Shapes and colour,
Number and size
Thickness and position.
THE CORE OF A PATTERN REPEATS OVER AND OVER AGAIN!

Kate and Lily made this lovely mandala with natural materials. Can you see a pattern?!
On the first day of school I asked the children to use different math tools to see if they could make patterns. Here is what these mathematicians came up with!

After we sorted all of the pictures of what we were thankful for, we arranged them on a bar graph. We discovered that most children are grateful for their family!
We went outside to our wonderful new outdoor classroom. We created a graph together of our favourite summer activities. We discovered that most of the children liked playing outside. They should really enjoy the natural feel of this classroom environment.
