Ask your child..."How do plants drink?"
We have started a curriculum based inquiry on MATTER. At the beginning of every inquiry I always ask the children "What they think they know about a topic?" It is a quick formative assessment of their understanding and helps me know what they need to learn. As you see below, we really need to work on the concept of gas! I think they know gasoline is a liquid that goes in a car ...and we will do more experiments so they understand what gas is. Every week we have a knowledge building circle, to discuss what they have learned and we clear up an misconceptions.

NICO HAD THIS BIG QUESTION!
Gravity is a force that tries to pull two objects toward each other. Earth’s gravity is what keeps you on the ground, what causes objects to fall, and is why the objects fall down rather than up!
Lily inspired us with her wasp nest! Initially the children went to the Library for their Inquiry time. All of the children went on Pebble Go to learn about bees and wasps. Mrs. Collier helped them record what they learned. The they did a making thinking visible routine called CSI. The children were asked to describe their feelings about insects in a Colour, Symbol and Image. As they put up their sticky notes, the children explained their thinking. Actually many of the children quite like insects. Then they did another routine called Tug of War. They drew their feelings about whether insects help or harm the environment. Next we watched several videos to find out both sides of that debate. It was interesting to note that most of the children felt insects are more helpful to the Earth. Many felt bees were especially important because they make honey. However, we did learn that they have a very special role of pollinating flowers and providing us with a lot of different food!
WHY DO MOSQUITO BITES ITCH?
BUSY BEES
INSECTS
This presentation was inspired by Soraya who was in my class a few years ago. She was very concerned about colony collapse disorder. After learning about the disappearing bees the children realized that man can have a negative effect on the environment. It was a very powerful inquiry and we all learned a lot. This presentation has been shared with your child on UG cloud. I know Soraya wants everyone to help save our bees!
Markus brought in a crab shell which inspired another inquiry!! We found out that crab's live in all of the Earths Oceans! They can live in both salt and fresh water. We thought it was a cool adaptation that their eyes can go up and down. The shell protects the eyes and also, the animal from predators.
We found this caterpillar nest on the yard which inspired us to ask lots of questions!
Mrs. Shannon was very excited that the Toronto Blue Jays got to play the Wild Card Game. It gave us a great opportunity to learn about these birds which are a symbol of the team. Below you will see all the information we learned from Pebble Go. It was cool to realize that 30 cm. is about the length of a child's arm from finger tip to elbow....which is how long a Blue Jay is!
NICO helped inspire us today by bringing in his corn snake skin "Charlie"! This gave us an opportunity to learn about shedding skin and make a connection to our caterpillars which are growing too. We looked at the pattern on the actual snake skin and then the children drew it in their "Wonder Journals". We also learned that a corn snake can grow up to 1.5 meters, which is almost as long as Kaden. There sure is a lot of Math to discover in Inquiry Time!
We discovered that a corn snake could grow to be 1.5 metres long....that is just about as long as Kaden!
